Noise cancellation versus passive isolation

Active cancellation works best on constant low-frequency noise — engine drone, air conditioning, train rumble. It does much less for voices. A pair with a good physical seal will often beat a pair with aggressive ANC and a poor fit, so treat tip selection as part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.

Codecs and why they mostly do not matter

Unless you are on a device that supports a high-resolution codec end to end, the codec badge on the box changes very little. Fit, tuning and microphone quality account for far more of the day-to-day experience.

Battery life claims

Manufacturer figures are measured at moderate volume with ANC off. Expect roughly two-thirds of the claimed number in normal use, and check the case capacity separately — that is what determines whether you can travel without a charger.

Water resistance

An IPX4 rating handles sweat and light rain. IP57 and above survives being dropped in a puddle. If you train in these, the rating is not a nice-to-have.
